Hurricane Lowell slams into over one million Americans as Hawaii loses power | 8 Sep 2026 | Hurricane Lowell has slammed into the Hawaiian Islands, triggering urgent tornado and flash flood watches for more than a million Americans and tourists. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued multiple alerts early Tuesday morning, including a severe flash flood and hurricane warning across the islands of Kauai and O’ahu, home to the heavily populated city of Honolulu. Lowell is currently a Category 2 hurricane, with sustained winds of more than 100 mph. A tornado watch has been issued on Kauai, the fourth-largest of Hawaii’s major islands. There are approximately 100,000 residents and tourists on Kauai on any given day. Nearly 90 percent of the island has lost power as of 9am ET Tuesday morning.
