Kazakhstan starts testing airport arrivals for Marburg virus | 7 Oct 2024 | The health authorities in Kazakhstan have introduced mandatory body temperature checks of passengers arriving in the country's airports from abroad, according to a statement on Monday. This comes amid an outbreak of a highly infectious and potentially lethal disease in Africa. The illness, known as Marburg virus disease (MVD), starts with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sore throat, and abdominal pain. In some cases, patients die through extreme blood loss. Marburg is from the same family of viruses as Ebola but has been described as more severe. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease has a fatality rate of up to 88%.
