A Secular Prayer for Occupied Lands --by Michael Rectenwald

I strongly deplore
Terror’s deadly mores,
The daily drop of heads,
The barbarism,
I will not forget,
This parade of hoary views,
Nor the men who sentence them,
With lies, froth, and fear.

I still abhor
The Shock and Awe,
The horrific barrage of bombs,
The torture of Islam,
The raped nation without arms,
‘Democratized’ by harm,
And now that heads have rolled,
Still no one is fooled.

Let More be made scapegoat
For those who cut the throats
Of men mired in deathly debt,
At the NeoCons’ behest;
Liars, Murderers, Thieves,
Halliburton, Bushmen, Militaries,
Rabid Neo-Conmen,
Who plunder, under Capitalism’s Creed.

And who did Nine-Eleven?
I cannot even imagine
Yet these crimes are joined
By Allah, Yaweh, the Lord;
When shall we be released,
From deathly sick disease,
Religion’s fiery hell-pit,
And the wars it does emit?

Religion, ideology,
A code of social polity,
A way to sanction crime
And make it look divine,
And make the poor expect
From inhuman neglect
Some unearthly reward
For having been ‘reborn.’

And now when rulers steal
Profit, kill, abuse,
Dominate, dictate, deal,
Ideologize, lie, confuse,
Mislead, misrepresent, misplace,
Arms, legs, head, feet and truth;
What more do we have to lose,
By obeying them no more?
